PSHE at Castle Hill
At Castle Hill, we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We use the Jigsaw scheme of work to deliver our PSHE curriculum. This is a whole school approach which incorporates assemblies, class activities and whole class PSHE lessons.
Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they truly are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. It incorporates mindfulness which reflects our ‘growth mind-set’, PROUD trait and MAGIC habit ethos. We inspire our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In doing so we help develop their sense of self-worth, self-esteem and respect.
We teach the children how society is organised and governed. We ensure that they experience the process of democracy in school through School Council and having a say in things that they would like to see happening at school. We teach them about human rights and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse multicultural society and to understand British values, this is reflected in weekly ‘Votes for Schools’ and ‘Choosing boards’. This allows children to explore different viewpoints and promote tolerance and a sense of self value.
We encourage the children to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active citizenship, e.g. charity fundraising, the planning of school special events such coffee mornings, assemblies or, involvement in an activity to help other individuals or groups less fortunate than themselves.
We offer children the opportunity to hear visiting speakers, such as health workers, police, and representatives from the local community whom we invite into the school to talk about their role in creating a positive and supportive local area.
