Assessment
Teaching and learning at Castle Hill is based on a cycle of planning, assessment and evaluation. This means that work can be matched to the ability of the children, and that targets can be set that help children to make progress and achieve well. Children know what their targets are and the staff help children to measure their own progress towards meeting them through regular opportunities for self-assessment and conferencing. Targets are regularly shared with parents at termly Parent Teacher meetings.
At the end of Reception, assessments contribute to an Early Years Foundation Stage Profile for each child.
In Year 2, towards the end of Key Stage 1, and again in Year 6, at the end of Key Stage 2, each child is assessed on their progress in the National Curriculum core subjects. In KS1 this is by means of teacher assessment informed by SATS (Standard Assessment Tests and Tasks) and at KS2 by SATS tests. Each child is then given a level according to their achievements.
The levels we would expect an average child to achieve as s/he progresses through primary school are given below:
| Age of Child | National Curriculum level of attainment |
|---|---|
| 5 years and below | Working towards level 1 |
| 5 years | Level 1 |
| 6 years | Working towards level 2 |
| 7 years | Level 2 |
| 8 years | Working towards level 3 |
| 9 years | Level 3 |
| 10 years | Working towards level 4 |
| 11 years | Level 4 |
In the Summer Term a detailed Record of Achievement is sent to parents of all children in Reception to Year 6, with parents of Nursery children receiving their child's 'Book of Experience'.
Parents are most welcome to make an appointment with the class teacher or the Headteacher if they have any concerns or require information on their child's progress. If we have any concerns we invite parents in to discuss these with us.
